河原典史は、立命館大学文学部教授、専門は歴史地理学。近代日本における漁民の移
動と、それにともなう水産関連産業の変化について歴史地理学からアプローチしてき
た。調査対象は、サケ缶詰産業だけでなく、バンクーバー島東岸の塩ニシン製造業や
、同島西岸における日本人開拓漁村もある。民族や出身国（国籍）の違いからなる国
際的な分業システムのなかで、日本人水産移民がサケ・クジラ・ニシンをめぐる水産
業に従事していたことを明らかにした。また、第二次世界大戦以前にカナダで水産業
に携わった日本人漁民（一世）に対し、戦後に彼らの二世はガーディナー（庭園・造
園業）として活躍した。最近の研究テーマとして、その世代交代のシステムについて
も視野を広げている。著書に、単著『カナダにおける日本人水産移民の歴史地理学研
究』（古今書院、2021年）、『カナダ日本人漁業移民の見た風景―前川家「古写真」
コレクション』（編）（三人社、 2013）等がある。
Norifumi Kawahara is a professor at Ritsumeikan University. Kawahara specialized in
historical geography and particularly has defined the realities of life and work of
Japanese fishermen in Canada through various sets of data including fire insurance
plans, old photos, and life history interviews. His research focus has not only been the
salmon canning industry along the BC coast but also the salted herring processing
business in the east coast of Vancouver Island as well as the fishing villages of
Japanese migrant settlers in the west coast of the island. Kawahara revealed that
Japanese fishing migrants had engaged in fishing industries related to salmon, whale,
and herring in the international system of division of labor which was defined by ethnic
and national differences. His most recent publication is Nihonjin Suisan Imin no Rekishi
Chirigaku Kenkyu [The Studies of Historical Geography on Japanese Fishing Migrants]
(Kokon Shoin, 2021).
